Frequently asked questions
Folkness is a Swedish company based in Herrljunga. This is where our offices, warehouse and brand store are located.
We developed the idea behind the Folkness duvet ourselves, and all products are stocked and shipped from our own warehouse. This allows us to offer fast and reliable deliveries. Folkness is therefore not a dropshipping company. We sell primarily through our own channels, and are also available via Åhléns' e-commerce.
Production takes place in Europe. Our fabrics are sourced from Portugal, and the duvets are sewn and assembled in Estonia.
Wash it more or less the same way you normally wash your bedding.
The difference is that a duvet takes up quite a bit of space in the machine, so in a regular washing machine you should wash one duvet at a time. It’s perfectly fine to wash pillowcases at the same time. (Depending on the size of your washing machine, it may also be possible to wash two duvets together.)
Because it’s so easy to handle and you don’t have to struggle with removing and putting on a duvet cover, you can break your usual laundry routine.
Normally you might wash all your bedding at once to deal with everything in one go.
A good tip is to skip the usual laundry pile and wash your Folkness duvets individually when needed instead. You don’t need to make the bed anyway — it’s already made!
Another tip to avoid washing your Folkness duvets too often is to simply turn them over after some use. Your fitted sheet and pillowcases usually need to be washed more frequently than the duvet, since they are in closer contact with your body and collect more dirt, moisture and oils.
Our Folkness duvets can be washed at 60°C when needed. However, we generally recommend washing at lower temperatures, as the difference between, for example, 40°C and 60°C is often smaller than you might think. Modern washing machines and detergents usually do a very good job at lower temperatures as well. To eliminate dust mites, however, 60°C is required.
Do not use fabric softener. Preferably use liquid detergent and avoid overdosing. Choose a gentle detergent without bleach.
The fastest way is to use a tumble dryer, but air drying works just as well. And it dries quickly – wash it in the morning and hang it up, and it will usually be dry by the evening. Air drying is of course the best option for both the environment and your wallet. Both methods work perfectly well.
For best results, dry one Folkness duvet at a time in a standard tumble dryer.
Depending on how efficient your tumble dryer is, the duvet may not always be completely dry at the end of the cycle (just like with regular duvet covers). If your dryer gets the Folkness duvet completely dry right away, you can ignore the options below.
Option 1: Take it out, turn it over a bit, and run the dryer for a little longer — start with about 20 minutes.
Option 2: Let it air dry the rest of the way if you’re not going to bed right away.
Do NOT use tennis balls or similar items.
We believe it’s important that both the feel and the look are as close as possible to what you are already used to. Most people prefer sleeping against a natural material rather than polyester. Other so-called “2-in-1” duvets are usually made with polyester (microfiber) as the outer fabric, which in our view makes them essentially the same as a standard synthetic duvet, regardless of color or design. Using duvet covers made from polyester is, as far as we know, not very common.
That’s why our duvets are wrapped in a wonderful fabric made from 100% organic cotton in a crisp percale weave. The fabric has a thread count of 200 and the cotton is both GOTS and OEKO-TEX® certified. The filling is also OEKO-TEX® certified, ensuring that it does not contain harmful chemicals.
Our duvets do contain a layer of microfiber as well, but its only purpose is to keep the filling in place — you will never come into direct contact with it.
Our fabric comes from Portugal, and the entire duvet is carefully manufactured in Estonia with a focus on both quality and sustainability.
Maybe not for you. But many people do find it difficult. And it’s not just about being lazy — for some it can simply be uncomfortable, heavy, or there may be other limitations. For anyone who appreciates a simpler everyday routine, this can be a welcome relief.
Many people look for duvet covers with hand holes to make bed-making easier — with Folkness, you don’t have to think about that at all.
At first glance, you might think there’s no difference at all. We would say there’s quite a big difference. A regular duvet is not designed to work on its own. It’s usually not particularly attractive either, with visible channel stitching that holds the filling in place and fairly heavy seams along the edges. The outer fabric is also not intended to be in direct contact with the body. That’s why a regular duvet more or less requires a duvet cover.
The Folkness duvet is a combination of a duvet and a duvet cover. It has been carefully designed to function as a single product while still looking like a traditional duvet cover on the bed. For example, everything is sewn together, which means the duvet stays in place and doesn’t shift around, create empty edges, or slip out of the cover.
Yes, absolutely! With Folkness, you don't have to think about duvet covers at all, because you no longer need to put duvet covers on and off at all. How nice?
Not at all — quite the opposite! Just put it in the washing machine, let it dry, and it’s ready to go again. No hassle with duvet covers. A nice bonus is that everything becomes clean and fresh at the same time. Many people are good at washing their duvets regularly, but we also know that many people never do.
Yes, that was a question we asked ourselves as well. After all, it’s nice to change the look of the bedroom from time to time.
So we actually did a fairly extensive survey about it.
What we found was that it turned out to be more or less a non-issue.
Most people tend to have one set of duvet covers and pillowcases that are their favorites — often slightly nicer or more expensive ones that they really enjoy using. Instead of taking out another set from the closet, or going back to older bedding, people usually plan their laundry so they can keep using the same favorite set.
That’s what we discovered — and when we think about it ourselves, it actually makes perfect sense.
A good tip if you want to change the feel of the bedroom is to add a throw blanket or switch out a pillow from time to time. Small changes like that can make a big difference to the overall look.
But if it’s important for you to change bedding every time you wash it, our recommendation is simply to have two Folkness duvets at home. 🙂
We often get questions about how long a Folkness duvet lasts. That’s understandable, especially since it’s a fairly new product and also a combination of two products, which naturally makes customers curious about durability.
Because people use and wash their bedding in different ways, it’s difficult to talk about an exact number of years. Some people wash their bedding once a week, others every two or three weeks, and so on.
We have chosen to follow the recommendation from the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association regarding how often bedding should be washed. Their recommendation is to try to wash it every two weeks. However, we believe that the most common interval is somewhere around every second or third week, and based on that we say that our duvets should last around five years.
In many cases they will most likely last longer than that, or for an even longer period if they are washed less frequently.
They are designed for normal everyday use and for frequent washing, and we use a high-quality percale weave that is both durable and comfortable.
Is that a reasonable lifespan? We would say it is.
But if you want to compare it to regular bedding, the question might instead be how long the bedding you use today typically lasts — and unfortunately that’s something we can’t answer. It’s not a question that is often asked when it comes to traditional bedding.
Normally you wash your duvet cover and pillowcases – not the duvet itself. We dare to suggest that in most homes the duvet is washed at most once a year. If you wash it twice a year, you are probably already doing better than the majority (based on our very general observation).
One of the biggest advantages of a Folkness duvet is that the entire product is washed every time. Because the duvet and the cover are one single product, you get both cleaned at once.
Experience the feeling of everything being freshly washed – it’s hard to beat.
That said, we don’t want to encourage unnecessary washing. The Folkness duvet should be washed when needed. Turning it over and using it a bit longer is often a better option than washing it too frequently.
We recommend trying to break the usual laundry routine and avoid over-washing. Many of us tend to let laundry pile up and then wash everything at once. But does everything really need to be washed on a fixed schedule?
The most important items to wash more frequently are your fitted sheet and pillowcases. The duvets for the whole family may not need to be washed as often. Wash your Folkness duvets when needed instead. For example, your duvet might need washing more often than your partner’s for various reasons.
We personally like the slightly relaxed, naturally wrinkled look — but if you normally iron your bedding, go ahead! Just make sure to use a low heat setting (one dot on the iron). Higher heat may flatten the duvet slightly and reduce its fluff.
Otherwise, we recommend using a steamer — it works perfectly.
Another great tip is simply to use a regular spray bottle with water. Lightly mist the duvet and smooth out the wrinkles with your hands. It works really well.
– The duvets are produced in Estonia in a Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified facility.
– Sewing also takes place in Estonia at the same facility.
– The outer fabric, filling and inner fabric are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 certified.
– The outer fabric is also GOTS certified.
Because that would take away some of what makes the Folkness duvet special. It would no longer be as easy to handle — and simplicity is exactly what we focus on.
Folkness duvets are designed to be as easy as possible to wash and dry.
That said, our duvets are still pleasantly fluffy and comfortable. But if you are used to a very large and heavy down duvet, there will naturally be a difference.
We currently offer a medium-warm option and continuously work on developing new variations.
We love percale!
But we also chose a percale weave because it’s a durable and long-lasting fabric that feels fresh and breathable, while still being soft against the skin. It offers a great balance between comfort and durability, making it perfect for duvets that are washed and used frequently. Percale is also excellent at regulating temperature, which helps it feel cool when it’s warm and comfortably warm when it’s cooler. In short, it’s a great match for our Folkness duvets — both functional and comfortable.
We know that when it comes to textile products, the largest environmental impact usually occurs during the production and transportation of the product — in other words, before the product even reaches the end customer.
That’s where we have tried to make the best choices we can.
We use GOTS-certified outer fabric and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 certified outer fabric, filling and inner fabric.
Production takes place in a Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified facility.
The fabrics are sourced from Portugal and the duvets are manufactured in Estonia.
How we as consumers treat the product in everyday use also matters, even if the environmental impact is generally smaller than during production.
Some people wash far too often, while others only wash when it is absolutely necessary. We are aware that our duvets may require more washing cycles compared to using traditional duvet covers. At the same time, we like to challenge the usual laundry habits. For example:
– Do all the bedding items in the household really need to be washed at the same time? Wash the Folkness duvets that actually need washing.
– Do all duvets need to be washed at the same interval? Maybe yours needs washing this week, but not your children’s.
– Fitted sheets and pillowcases should usually be washed more frequently, since you are in direct contact with them.
– Try simply turning the duvet over and using it a bit longer instead of falling into the “everything must be washed on the same day” routine.
– How modern is your washing machine? This can make a big difference to environmental impact. Newer machines are generally much more energy efficient.
– Avoid using higher temperatures than necessary and consider using eco programs when possible.
If you know that you have chosen a product that has been responsibly produced and not transported long distances, you have already made a meaningful environmental choice. Washing less is of course good, but making a thoughtful decision when purchasing the product is often even more important.
